CAPS – “CERTIFIED AGING-IN-PLACE
SPECIALIST A designation by the National Association of Home Builders that distinguishes
professionals who have
been educated and trained to help retirees, older adults, and
physically challenged individuals remain in their homes- regardless
of income or ability.
The term “Aging in Place”
speaks of a situation where someone is of an age or disablitiy
which may require them to consider living in another location due to the
inadequacy of
their
current residence, but they wish to age in place, to stay where they are.
Home
modifications can be the key to continuing to live in a familiar environment.
It involves designing for new construction or remodeling a home to incorporate
elements that create
more safe, comfortable and independent spaces for everyone.
Designing and building
these spaces requires:
An understanding of the abilities and/ or limitations of the end user by all
parties involved,
A designer who is trained and educated on all necessary details and
available products,
A willing builder/ contractor who realizes and respects the needs of the
homeowner,
It does not require increased
costs to the homeowner over typical construction,
or
mean “clinical” looking spaces.
